Success in one's life comes in many forms. One may see success as a small feat but to others, it would be viewed as huge. Awasin and Jamie find many successes throughout the novel. Discuss how they find success. What makes them successful and are they actually successful? What are some successes that you have found in your life? Who do you feel is a successful person and why?
I feel Jamie and Awasin had become successful after their big hunt. They got just about 50 pounds of meat and fish for the journey back home and to survive the winter. The characteristic about the boys that I believe makes them successful is having a positive outlook throughout most of their journey. Being able to just keep pushing and trying their hardest all the time to do better. The reason they could be this way is because of how they were raised.
ReplyDeleteI have been successful in finding good friendships no matter what school I go to. I have been to four different high schools having them being spread out to one In Gatineau two in Montreal and one here. I have had two drastic moves but no matter what school I went to there was always a good group of people I met that I got along with. Being able to make friends easily has been a great help for me through out the years because I knew I would always meet new people not always good but it great to know people a little everywhere.
I feel like most successful people are the ones who have jobs know what they are doing in life and what they want for themselves. I do not necessarily have anyone pinpointed because in my beliefs everyone and anyone can be successful and have success in their lives. The reason I feel I think this way is because for me wealth and popularity does not exactly mean your successful it can simply just mean your popular and rich, for me it has more to do with life in all education relationships with not only parents but humans in general.
Our two main protagonists in Farley Mowats “Lost in The Barrens” encounter many challenges throughout the novel. However, along with this, they also achieve many successes. A big success was their first night in their cabin which they built together. There was so much hard work put into it and to finally be able to relax and sleep in the warm house instead of the small igloo must’ve felt amazing. As well as this, capturing and training the two sled dogs was also a big win as they finally had hope to leave the barrens. I portrayed the dogs as two little beams of hope to the boys as they had been feeling very down and not many things had been going well for them. It was perfect timing that they showed up right when the boys would need to move their food storage to their cabin.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Monica in saying that success can be different things to different people. For me, success looks like a secure job and feeling satisfied and happy with where you are in life at that point in time. But to the next person, it could be being filthy rich and having all the most expensive possessions. It definitely varies from person to person but one trait is constant and that is the trait of happiness because, most of the time, success is linked to happiness.
In my eyes I see my parents as successful as, although many hardships came with it, they still managed to raise me and get me through high school while remaining supportive and caring. I’m very grateful for them and what they’ve done for me. Also, they seem to be happy with where their life has led them and what they had to overcome to get this far. My dad always wanted to be a pilot and he has achieved that goal, as well as my mom who wanted to be a flight attendant also reached her goal.
the dogs being they're ray of light I definitley agree with that. when they found those dogs the way the author described this is like the boys had a weight lifted off their shoulders and thoughts of making it home safe and earlier than expected.
DeleteAn example of how the boys found success was when they met the Eskimos through Peetyuk and ended up going back home to their families, which is what they tried to do by themselves which they decided to go back, but luck found them. Another success was when the boys got a lot of meat from their big hunt which is staple to them for the winter and that they got dogs now it's not only feeding them but it's feeding the dogs too. I believe their willingness to keep pushing and moving on makes them successful and plays a big role in their success of course. An other thing would be how the boys managed to make a shelter even when they cut down a tree and it wasn’t going to work, they kept trying and found a different way that would work to make shelter, and they were successful in building their cabin.
ReplyDeleteSome successes I have found in my life is when I got my G2 which I had gotten last summer after months of cancelations, but when the day came I was excited and nervous but I came out of it successfully. I think that day is a really big thing and completely relatable for other people that wanted their license last winter but when covid hit and everything shut down we had to keep rescheduling for months, but of course there's always light at the end of the tunnel. Another success is as Monica said with friendships and I've kept certain bonds for a long time and that to me is a huge success that I hold very close to my heart and forever will.
Who I feel are successful people are my parents because they have overcome many obstacles in their life that got them to where they are. An example would be my parents landscaping business they had in Florida, when they had to move to Canada because my grandmother got sick, unfortunately they had to sell the company and our house, but gratefully they sold both and made quite a bit from it, which is how they got their new business today of selling exotic cars and trucks it's what my dad had always wanted to do since he was a kid and my mother had been interested in cars as well. Which closes up to them being successful and that to me is huge and I view them as role models and so do my siblings.
Awasin and Jamie are successful young men. They found success by being determined and using any previous knowledge they had. They had set the goal of surviving the barrens and heading back home, having this goal helped them become successful because it gave them motivation to get minor jobs accomplished. All the minor jobs they worked at ended up being extremely vital to being successful in surviving the barrens. For example, had they not stockpiled food, they would have starved or had they not built a log cabin in the Hidden Valley, they would have frozen to death.
ReplyDeletePersonally, one of my greatest successes are my grades in school. Like Jamie and Awasin I am determined to do well in school because I need them for the type of college program I will be going into. I also have minor successes on a daily basis, like helping my dad get something finished in the barn that he’s wanted done for a long time. A recent success would have been helping my dad trim a filly’s feet. She had never had anything like that done before so it took a lot of time and patience, but we finally got her trimmed and she looked much better.
Similar to Jamie and Allison I find that both of my parents are extremely successful, each in their own ways. My mom has ankylosing spondylitis and she has finally become successful in treating it. It took her a long time to even be accurately diagnosed but she fought for it even when the doctors weren’t working hard to help her find a solution. My dad is a successful horse person. He has raised horses all his life, he has been asked to judge at countless fairs and is known by many Belgian horse breeders. For a period of time, he was also a very successful farrier. One time he spent two entire afternoons shoeing a Percheron mare for a client. That client won Grand Champion Percheron Mare and was asked by the judge who had shod her because it was so well done. I believe they are both very successful for those small reasons but also because they love each other and work together as an amazing team.
Awasin and Jaime have had many times when they were successful, and some when they were less fortunate. However, I agree with Jaime that one of their most successful feats would be their first night in the cabin. Before the cabin was built, they were in a freezing igloo. They literally froze, even though they had a fire in the igloo. However, at least they had something to keep them warm and give them comfort while they rested up. This helped them survive and gave them shelter against many dangers such as wolverines and blizzards. They were also successful because they had each other, and they were able to get home because they persevered through the toughest of times. They never gave up and as a result, they ended up finding their home again.
ReplyDeleteOne big success I’ve had in my life is getting through school. I haven’t always been good at school, and sometimes –especially in grade 10 math- I almost failed it. However, I was successful at that because I worked hard at studying and I had help from my mom to help me. She was able to explain it in ways that sometimes I could understand better. One other success is being able to take care of my kitten. Because of my dad paying for vaccines and paying for their food and everything, I can be successful in caring for my pet and keeping him healthy for as long as he may live.
I would say both my parents are successful in different ways. Going back to when my mom had her surgeries, it took her a long time to even care for us the way she used to as far as cooking and cleaning goes. However, with the doctors’ help, she was able to build up enough strength to do some of the things she used to be good at doing for us. Now she is successful in being able to even spend more time with us since she recovered. As far as my dad goes, he’s very successful as far as being there for us. Even though the Covid-19 hit, he was able to keep his job since he’s essential, and he can take care of us through emotional means, financial means and physical means. He is very successful at being a great husband and an even better father.
Success is one of those things in life that can only be achieved with hard work and determination. Without those things’ success is hard to come by. Awasin and Jamie knew what they had to do to survive and get back to their families. With their hard work for example building the sled helped them accomplish a lot. As well as they were determined to get back home and nothing would stop them from accomplishing the battles they went through to do so. They retrieved success when they finally made it back home. You’re right Allison! Their success was better fulfilled once they met Peetyuk and the rest of the Eskimoes. Perhaps without him it would’ve been a bigger struggle to get home.
ReplyDeleteSuccess I have had in my life that I’m proud of is definitely winning hockey games and big tournaments like Provincials. Provincials is a tournament where you play to determine your position in all of Ontario. That year we came 4th in the province. I could never feel how I felt after that game. When you reach success, the feeling is unmatchable because you know how hard you worked to get there. Honestly, winning a simple league game makes me feel incredible because, it may not be a big success but it’s still a success to me.
Who I feel is successful in my life is definitely my dad. Growing up in small town Vankleek Hill and working on the back of a garbage truck practically since the day he could walk is admirable. Then he took over the business from his dad and expanded it into six garbage trucks picking up in five townships and about forty 18 wheelers running up and down the highway hauling garbage and scrap. He took his hard work to fulfill his dreams and I’m so proud of him. He’s had his business for over 20 years now and it has brought nothing but success for him and our family.
Success comes in different ways for a lot of people. Awasin and Jamie had their success in a lot of different aspects throughout the chapters. Finding success always comes with a struggle. You need to know what you want to achieve. It takes the two young boys time to get places, build things, kill animals. At the end of a fight for something another one starts. Each success still gave the boys courage to continue to the next. One of the main success I feel they were most proud of was meeting the Eskimos. After long stories of hearing stories of how bad and dangerous these people were. They finally got a look inside of how they live and treat others. Its not a big success but knowing in their hearts that they took down they’re walls and let these people help them. It makes them proud to know that they had the courage to come forward to these people.
ReplyDeleteA success in my life is my dogs. It doesn’t seem like a big success but it means so much too me. Growing up with Jackson taught me the kind of bonds you can make with people. In a way learning how to care for a dog teaches you a lot of different things. It’s taught me some people will always be there for you, love you and care for you. They may not talk but they do leave a big impact on a lot of people. No matter how much work is it to own 3 dogs. I wouldn’t trade my dogs for anything.
Someone I feel is very successful is my dad. My dad didn’t grow with a lot of money. He worked and all in all caused a lot trouble from the stories I’ve heard. He owns a business DMD Picard selling dairy equipment. My dad didn’t have the money to attend college. When he found this job he read books, self taught himself and never gave up. He’s a really hard worker and is always reading up on something new so he knows what’s coming in and out. He worked hard to be where he is today and deserves it all.
In the last few chapters of Lost in The Barrens you really start to see the many successes that Awasin and Jamie have conquered and fought for. Awasin and Jamie find success by working as a team and doing things together. A huge aspect of how they are successful through the novel is that they never give up. For example, they never gave up on trying to gather food and trying to make shelter, especially when the days started to get colder. In addition to this, the boys also never gave up on each other. When they encountered the bear and Jamie passed out from running though the brutally cold weather, Awasin took initiative and took care of Jamie and made sure he was alright. Another reason to why Awasin and Jamie were successful was that they were always thinking positively and always wanted to lighten up the mood. Furthermore, they never wanted to talk about the bad stuff that could happen to them out In the Barrens. The characteristics that the two young boys have, did indeed make the ending result of them being home and safe possible. They didn’t only make their journey a success, but they also made Peetyuk’s privilege to be with white men a success as well. Even though the boys had some failures along the way, those failures were a part of their success.
ReplyDeleteIn my life I have found many successes. As Allison said, one of them being when I got my G2 in September after many cancellations and many frustrating days. Even after my G2 being delayed by months I still practiced driving and never gave up despite how frustrated I was. In my life some of my successes are small and some big. For example, one of my biggest success in life is being able to maintain a happy and healthy family life. No matter what happens, I know that my family will be there for me because of the strong bond we all hold. Another success that I have in my life are the friendships I have, and how I have kept them for years, and will continue to keep them for the upcoming years. Another success in my life would be being able to go to school. In my opinion graduating from high school will probably be one of my biggest millstones in my life. Graduating from high school and going on to post-secondary would not be possible if I wasn’t able to be enrolled in school. People take school for granted, but to me it is a very special opportunity to have.
In my life I think my mom is the most successful person I know. I will always look up to her and be proud of what she has accomplished. My mom is successful to me for many reasons. She works hard, she loves people unconditionally, she never gives up no matter what is going on in her life and most of all she always puts her kids first. When I was growing up my mom had 4 girls living at home and had to take care of them all by herself. She never quit and always made sure we were alright and had everything we needed. She never takes anything for granted and always shows so much respect to other around her. A huge success that she had went through very recently was working at Prescott Russell nursing home in Hawkesbury when there was a COVID-19 outbreak. She went to work every day, putting her life at risk, to help the old folks that can’t take care of themselves. My mom went through the months of overtime, lack of sleep, isolation, and she came out of all that COVID free and as healthy as ever.
Jamie and Awassin have just as much success in the novel as they do bad luck. Some of the success the boys had would be the fire drill with ou it they wouldn’t have been able to make a fire to stay warm. Another example would be when they hunted all the deer because if they hadn’t of found those deer they wouldn’t have had enough food for winter.
ReplyDeleteSome success’s that I have had in my life would be that I am a hard worker ive been at the same job for 4 years. Ive saved up enough money to buy my first pickup and a couple toys here and there. I would say those are my biggest success.
Someone I find very successful is my mom she has taught over 3000 students in here career and there have been some tough times and tough students to teach but she always gets it done. She’s taught at VCI for 27 years and have seen the school go through a lot of changes like all the technical advances the school board offers.
Jamie and Awassin have some success throughout the novel as well as defeats. Some of their success that Jamie and Awassin had were when they found the stone house for shelter when they were hiding from the Eskimos. They also had the success of always staying positive and always trying to stay ahead of things.
ReplyDeleteSome of the success that I think I've had would be that I've managed to make some fun out of this quarantine. I started ice fishing more and also bought a sled. I got a new job for the winter and its really fun as well.
Someone I find successful in my life would probably be my parents. My parents have managed to deal with me for this long and helped me with everything I need. They both work a lot but always seem to find energy to drive me to hockey whenever I needed, or drive me to milk cows at 5 in the morning. They help we with a lot and ask for very little.
Throughout the novel, Awasin and Jamie work to be successful with their tasks by using their own experiences, hard work and sheer willpower. The boys conquered many challenges and fears on their journey and didn’t let any of them stop them from reaching their main goal. In the end, they made it back home and even made a new friend. Overall, their journey was a success that also help them grow as people.
ReplyDeleteThere are still many goals left for me to reach and many more to set but at this point I’ve still had moments of success. I made good friends and I’m going to graduate from high school very soon. I’ve learned to grow from experiences and take responsibility for my actions. Personally, at this point in time, I think that being successful isn’t monetary or socially. I think building your character is successful as well.
Someone who’s successful in life is Samuel L. Jackson. He is probably one of the best actors of his generation and the movies he has been in, collectively grossed over 27 billion dollars worldwide. He likes what he does, which is most important, and he is good at it. He has said, “I love me on-screen.” He even watches his own movies.

ReplyDeleteDuring the novel Lost in the Barrens Jamie and Awasin become successful with a lot of things they have encountered. They use their ideas as a team and build on them to create bigger and better ideas. Such as when Jamie and Awasin built the cabin together, the clothes, the dog sled as well as having a fire place inside the cabin. All these incredible creations they have successfully made helped them get to where they are. Such as for what Allison said about when the boys met the Eskimos through Peetyuk, how they helped the boys go home to their families. They were also successful for being brave enough to go meet the Eskimos with Peetyuk. In the end it all worked out in their favor.
Something that I have become successful with in my life is. The rugby team I was playing for at my old high school won the women's championship. We were about to play against the hardest team in the whole league and to make it even better it was pouring rain. No one on our team had the mind set we should have to win that game. The score was 6 to 5 for the other team and there were only a couple seconds left, the field was wide open and I had the ball in my hands and just ran straight to the try zone. I placed the ball down and we got 5 points, the rush and the feeling I felt that day was amazing. Having a whole team run towards you with excitement and happiness is beyond a feeling to describe. That day is my most successful day.
Who I feel is successful in my life is definitely my mom she was the first one in her family to go to college and university. She started her dream job as a branch manager of DHL for a couple years then switched to become one of the bosses for Agility. My mom has never stopped pushing for success, she is one of the only people I know who wake up at 4am to go run on the treadmill then gets started on work 5 until 5. She is one of the hardest working people I know and love.
Jamie and Awasin have been successful since the very beginning in my opinion. They are only kids and started a journey with a group of men and when they got separated, the boys were able to survive all by them selves. They have shown success in many different ways throughout the novel, they found success in finally forming a strong friendship, they got enough resources to survive winter and last of all they were able to survive winter and make it back.
ReplyDeleteA couple ways I have found success in my life is when I got my first deer, I have been hunting since I was young and when I got my first deer it was such a rush for me because I had succeeded in getting the biggest animal I had ever shot at. Another way I accomplished success is when I got to the point where I was able to start buying skidoos and four-wheelers with my own money and realizing that hard work dose pay off. One last way I have found success is buy meeting new people and making new friends, I have always had success doing this and because of this I have a great group of friends and family around me.
Some people I have found to be successful in my life are my parents. My dad didn't grow up with much but he was able to have a great group of friends and even though there was a struggle, he now runs is own company and living with all the thing he wanted as a child. My mom has also found success in having her own hair studio as well and she has tough us many things that she used to do as child, that me and my sisters have become successful with.
in the book Jamie and Awasin got through trials and tribulations they fight off rough waters and fight off big bears, like Monica said, in my opinion they really only started succeeding when they killed off the dear, they were set for the winter. Without the deer's they would not have survived for long, lots of their success comes from each other they feed off of their knowledge that comes from there past. Like how Jamie knew how to make a bow. Or when awasin knows how to properly use all the deer's meat and skin. These things that they learned from the past help them to succeed and survive.
ReplyDeleteFor me, my success has come from my mistakes and I learn from them, lots of things that I have learned like to be smarter in certain situations or to just be a smarter student and be more involved in school. Another thing Ive learned is that everything happens for a reason, whether that be something good or bad its all in order for you to be your best self, best example would be when me and my frineds were stuck in Montreal although at the time it was unfortunate we made the best form it and when we look back we find the good moments and not the bad ones, in every situations there is always good you just have to wait and see it out to find your internal success.
The person I find the most successful would be bill Belichick and it's not because of all his super bowls or his money, I would be because he went from coaching a team where no one knew him to being one of the most popular coaches in the NFL, also he found success in trusting people, he had a kid who no one believed in and gave him a chance, he is now the winningest coach in NFL history. So for bill success was trusting in his environment and believing in his work.
Success is defined as the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. Success means different things to different people. The way a person describes success is based on their experiences, personality and values. Successes can be small feats or huge accomplishments. In the novel, “Lost on the Barrens”, Awasin and Jamie find many successes. Lost in the North the boys experience daily successes that contribute to their survival. Whether it be finding food for the winter, creating a shelter, escaping a grizzly attack, finding the two dogs, surviving snow blindness or finding Peetuk’s igloo. However, their greatest success is finding the courage to keep going despite the possibility of not making it back home and dying on the barrens. Their ability to look out for and encourage each other was a great success. The boys could have easily given up but their determination to keep pushing forward resulted in them being able to return home to their families. They had a goal and they accomplished it and at the same time they learned the importance of friendship and family.
ReplyDeleteI have had many successes in my life from the simple things such as learning to ride my bike, to moving to an English school in grade 9, to dealing with the break up of my family. This past year has been extremely difficult and my life has been turned upside down. However, despite all these changes I have kept moving forward. I have realized that even failures and disappointments can teach important lessons. I have learned the importance of friendships and family and gained life skills that I will take with me into the future. To me, success is not just the attainment of goals, it is about knowing what is most important in life, being grateful in all situations and continuing to move forward no matter what life throws at you.
There was a time, when if I was asked the question who do I think is successful, I would have said some famous person with great wealth. However, my opinion of success has changed and so has my opinion of who I think is successful. Today, I see my mom has a success. She has encountered many difficulties in her life, yet she keeps moving forward with lots of love and kindness for others. When things are going wrong, she is able to motivate herself to keep going forward. There are days when she says, “ One day at a time”, and other days she says, “one hour at a time” but she keeps pushing through. Despite all her challenges she finds ways to see the happiness in every day. To me that is the ultimate success!

ReplyDeleteDuring the novel they boys seem to find success in everyplace they decide to put their mind to. Personally, Id say that hunting for deer and fish was their biggest success, aside from living trough the winter of course. The boys tried and tried to find deer, and to finally get some would have felt great.
Id say that I have found success in a few ways, from being smaller ones like making it through high school, to getting my first car. Since I have started working, I have been able to save enough money to buy the things that make me happy, like a skidoo, my car, and a truck. To me, these are all wins.
Someone I find successful would be my dad, not because he has the best job in the world, or anything like that, but because he is happy where he is. He is always in a great mood and it seems like he is just loving life. So, to me, he is a successful person.

ReplyDeleteTo start off I just want to agree with Megan Sauve when she said success comes in many ways for different people. Some people find pride in success for making the bed in the morning while other can find it from enlisting in the military. But non the less success is huge either way because it gives people pride and will help them achieve other goals they have set throughout the day. And I think Jamie and Awasin are successful because they too started out with simple tasks that would be accomplished quite easily and would help them find success and pride.
I find myself that even knowing that if I start with a simple task, I can gain knowledge, success, and pride, I find myself often trying to bite off more than I can chew. I often try to take shortcuts in projects or situations that I face, and then I end up just being discouraged because it failed, or it didn’t turn out the way I was hoping. But more and more now I try to start off simple and move my way up. For example, I finished my basement, and I knew a lot of what I needed to know for doing the finishing work but when it came to some bigger jobs of the electrical, it was a bit daunting. So instead of just trying to figure it out as I went, I did some research and started off with looking at some plugs a light switch that were already installed upstairs. Then I went out to my shop and wired up a new plug and I finally felt comfortable enough to begin the electrical in my basement and I installed over ten plugs around 6 light switches with over 12 light fixtures and a bathroom fan and I found great success and pride.
When I think of successful people my mind automatically thinks of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. I think of them mainly because of their profit and empire they have made over the past few decades. But anyone with money can invest or buy a company and make even more money. But Bill and Steve started out with almost nothing. These men were two young gentlemen with empty pockets, but they had dreams and ambition. They started off by building circuit boards and doing basic programing in a tiny garage, but they just had to follow their dreams. But like I said before success comes in different forms, success doesn’t mean having money or a mansion. I think the true definition is being happy and true to yourself. And so if you want to be successful, follow your dreams.
In the book Awasin and Jamie found success when building their new “home” for the winter, they were able to get food, shelter and some wood and other materials to have a campfire if needed. As Jerbs and Monica said they fed off each other, if they were separated, I don’t think either of them would've succeeded in making it through the winter.
ReplyDeleteSuccess to me is accomplishing something or doing something that I didn’t think I would do, this past week I purchased a new computer, and I'm proud of myself for it because it's an object that shows my hard work, therefor it being a success. Another form of success is waking up on those days where you just want to sleep all day, those can be hard, so I see that as another success for me.
I feel like my brother is a very successful person because he was never really the best in school at a younger age, then he found out about what success can do for someone. He then turned his life around and was getting honors in his classes and instead of going the traditional route of post-secondary he went straight to work and is making very good money. Hes currently financing a brand-new car, and these are the reasons why I think my brother is a very successful person.
I believe they are successful in the way that they accomplished what they wanted to do by regrouping with their tribe. They worked hard to get out of the barrens, and they did successfully. A successful person in my opinion is whom achieves what they want in life. I consider myself as a successful person because I was able to achieve what I wanted in life to this point.
